One Assassin's creed is enough to challenge you from start to finish, but what happens when Ubisoft releases three games with multiple protagonists across centuries and continents? In the near future, society falls into a dark age where ignorance and violence reign supreme. The few survivors may have found a way out of this predicament: they have found a way to recruit assassins with unique talents who can help them create an effective resistance force against those who seek their extinction. Assassin's Creed is set in the 21st century, where two rival mega-corporations known as Abstergo Industries and the Templar Order are locked in a struggle for world domination. Both companies possess powerful artifacts called "Pieces of Eden", which hold great power. Desmond Miles is a descendant of several lines of prominent Assassins; through his ancestor Altaïr ibn La-Ahad, Desmond is a descendant of the Middle Eastern Assassin Order, through a Chinese member Zheng Zi Hu and a Russian member Nikolai Orelov. He was born into the Assassin lineage by means of artificial insemination as part of their attempt to expand their bloodlines, as they have been doing for centuries. Abstergo, however, discovered their existence and subsequently kidnapped young Desmond as a test subject to study his ancestors' DNA. By reliving the genetic memories of his ancestors through a machine called the "Animus", Desmond gains the knowledge and skills necessary to perform his duties as an Assassin. After escaping from Abstergo with the help of Lucy Stillman, his Assassin handler, he is forced to resume his earlier occupation as a bartender. Desmond returns home to discover that not only has he been kidnapped but his girlfriend has been abducted by Abstergo. He discovers that Abstergo has been using the Animus to study the genetic memories of his ancestors in order to gain access to their knowledge and skills. Desmond attempts to rescue Lucy and contacts the Assassins, but he is captured by Abstergo. After this, Desmond relives the genetic memories of his ancestors, including Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, who seeks out an Assassin named Haytham Kenway. They take a boat to America where they begin a new life as settlers under a man named John Connor. Connor proves to be a cruel and sadistic ruler, forcing immigrants into labor for his factory while shaping little more than clones from them through genetic manipulation. Haytham and Altaïr decide to kill Connor, but when Altaïr gets inside the factory, Connor's son Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor's real name) kills Haytham. As Ratonhnhaké:ton is running away, he sees his mother in the crowd. She tells him that he needs to run before Connor sees him. Ratonhnhaké:ton runs to his village in the forest where the young Kaniehtí:io (Kaniehtiio), originally named Akenatón, saves him from wolves attacking him.
